3 healthy breads that don't sacrifice flavour

November 28, 2014

There are many healthy bread options out there for all diets. But what are the best breads for health that taste good too?

3 healthy breads that don't sacrifice flavour

Bread has gotten a bad rap lately. People want less carbs, less gluten and less refined flour.

  • But the reality is, bread rules. It's delicious and versatile, and it doesn't have to be unhealthy at all.

Refined white flour

It's definitely ideal to avoid refined white flours when you're seeking healthy bread choices.

  • Why? Sugar. Specifically, increased blood sugar levels and unnecessary weight gain.
  • Your body treats the carbs in white bread in a similar way to sugar by secreting more insulin, and has a generally unhealthy response.
  • Try to avoid white bread loafs, croissants and the like.

1. Whole-grain bread

Whole-grain bread is literally made with the whole grain, meaning that all of the nutrition, fibre, iron and vitamin B remains after the grinding process, making it the highest nutritional value and lowest fat style of wheat flour-based bread.

  • Examples of whole-grain breads include barley bread, buckwheat bread and stone mill sprouted grain bread.
  • They're all very low in sugar production during the digestion process.
  • In general, no matter what type of bread you get, from wheat or multigrain to pumpernickel or rye bread, the best approach is to try to find ones made of 100 per cent whole grains.
  • Many of these bread types can appear healthy, but are not necessarily going to be made from the whole grain, so be sure to read the packaging and opt for the smallest amount of processed grain possible.

2. Whole-wheat bread

While not as healthy as whole-grain bread, whole-wheat bread is still very much preferable to white-flour bread.

  • The reason it's a little less healthy than whole grain is that parts of the grain are still removed during a refinement process, meaning that up to half of the nutritional value can be stripped out.
  • The end product can look very similar to whole-grain bread, but the taste and texture is less hearty, and the results are somewhat less healthy.

3. Gluten-free bread

Gluten-free breads can be a fantastic healthy option that's not just for celiacs and gluten-intolerant people.

  • There are many health benefits of gluten-free foods, from improved cholesterol levels to helping aiding with the digestive system.
  • Plus the breads can actually be extremely flavourful and pleasant in texture.
  • The breads can be made from a wide variety of grains and starches like corn starch, tapioca starch and brown rice flour.
