Doughnuts are the comfort food par excellence: there's nothing like the mix of sweet and fried, the moist give as you bite down, with the potential combination of toppings and flavours. While the artisanal doughnut wave may not have crested in Halifax quite yet, there are still some great options if you are in the mood for something traditional.
The Donut Stand
The Doughnut Stand operates from the Alderney Landing Farmers Market on Saturdays from 8 am until 1 pm. Take the week to build up an appetite – the doughnuts here are massive and gut-busting. You'll find flavours that you can’t get anywhere else, like the gooey and sweet peanut butter and jelly or the meaty and sweet maple bacon. They're more expensive than your average doughnut, but they also don't leave you with that greasy feeling that lesser, cheaper doughnuts sometimes do.
Lot Six Restaurant&Bar
1685 Argyle, Halifax, NS B3J 2B5Lot 6 has one of the most appealing dining rooms in downtown Halifax – a glass atrium that projects above the seating area, revealing the brick superstructure of an old building on historic Argyle Street. There's only one doughnut offered on the menu here – the New Orleans beignets. You get five small donuts on a plate, house made, super-moist and crispy, with a butterscotch dipping sauce; pair it with one of their famous cocktails.
Robie Street Station
Robie Street Station has a retro, funky, slightly 60s diner vibe – with multicoloured stools, aquamarine walls and a smiley staff to bring it all down to earth. There are fantastical creations made here – like the vanilla mochi cruller, for example, where the warm vanilla is subtly punctured by the mochi flavor, or the truly insane Doughnairnut, a doughnut topped with donair meat. If that's too much for you, go for the simple and wonderful cinnamon sugar.
Agricola Street Brasserie

It features an airy space with exposed wooden beams and brown leather banquette seating, with a candle-lit and intimate atmosphere at night. It features delicious churros on the dessert menu, fried to a golden crisp and braided, they come in a little metal basket with a pot of Mexican chocolate.
Just Us Cafe

Find a spot at the big communal table downstairs, or lodge yourself in an upstairs nook. Its sweets and pastries rotate on occasion, but there's usually a doughnut to be found in the mix.
