Founded in 1923, the Toronto Field Naturalists (TFN) is a volunteer-run non-profit nature conservation organization. We connect people with nature in the Toronto area, helping them to understand, enjoy, and protect Toronto’s green spaces and the species that inhabit them.
Members may come on any one of our 100+ guided nature walks each year, led by knowledgeable volunteers who enjoy sharing their passion for nature. We publicize a few of these each month for the enjoyment of the general public. Walks happen year round in natural areas & neighbourhoods all across Toronto, and a variety of themes are represented ranging from nature & ecology to history & heritage.
Members are invited to free monthly lectures given by noted experts, exploring everything from nature in the city to global environmental issues. Lectures are held live online by Zoom. Recordings are to members on our members-only site and to the public on our YouTube channel.
Members can make meaningful contributions to the protection of nature through participation in stewardship and citizen science initiatives like our Cottonwood Flats Monitoring Project, and in places like our 170+ hectares of private nature reserves.
Members Take Action in protecting Toronto’s green spaces and the species that inhabit them. By creating petitions, circulating important news, or representing TFN on advisory councils and stakeholder groups, we offer many opportunities for members to help raise awareness, advocate for nature, and inform decision-making.
