We have tried this restaurant many times and as the title says its very hit and miss. The last few times we've been very disappointed but thought we'd try again since on the odd occasion its been really good but once again last time we got take out only to get home to find very porely made sushi that resembled that of cat food along with a very gross overly fishy smell and taste. The sunomono wasnt even correct, the samon rolls we're very squishy and slimy and the crab meat might as well of been plastic, sadly most of the food ended up in the garbage. We wont be trying our luck again.
I have recently become a Sushi fanatic and Umai has been a great place to visit. I have been there at least 7 times in the last 3 months. Always good food, fresh, delicious. The Sushi Chefs are very skilled and the service is wonderful. Nice surprise in Sudbury!
I live in Toronto, downtown. I love sushi, and I have just a couple of places in Toronto where sushi, sushi rolls and handrolls are to my taste and quality. I went to Sudbury for two days for some business (in the middle of September 2011), found this place on-line, check reviews (that mostly were pretty positive) and decided to have a lunch there. Guys, if you like rice and mayonnaise, you are very welcome.... The quality of food is at the level "all you can eat" places. I ordered 5 different rolls (at least 3 of them were promised to be with raw fish), I didn't see the fish and I didn't taste it... The service was slow as described in some reviews, but OK. Ambiance is OK as well. But food was awful!!!!!
I was travelling to Sudbury and wanted to find a nice place to dine at for lunch. I have sushi all over the place, and finding this place, I thought that I would give it a try. I read a bunch of pretty good reviews online, but let me tell you... the current reviews just don't do this place justice. I was only disappointed with one thing. Their tea came in a teabag and it tasted a bit harsh. Typically I'm used to having loose-leaf tea in the pot and then savouring all of the flavours. However, having said that, everything, and I do mean everything else was spectacular. Their presentation is a 10 out of 10 as is the flavour and the freshness. Service was great. There was always a server at your beck and call, but they didn't bother you too much. I left their completely satisfied and have to say that this place stands up to any place in Toronto. And when you consider the prices, they certainly shine well. Not too expensive either. If I'm ever in Sudbury I'll definitely pay a visit to this place.
It had been a while since we've last visited Umai, a sushi restaurant we visited often. I've always been pleased with the service I've gotten there until today. Today left me disappointed. I am a great lover of Sashimi (read raw fish) and I ordered the course. I noticed the white tuna (butterfish) was very firm and upon tasting it appeared to be frozen. I had them take two pieces back and they were kind enough to substitute the white tuna with three pieces of salmon. When they brought me the Chirasi I found the white tuna again frozen. I put the white tuna aside on a used plate and informed the waitress. She took this used plate and brought back four pieces of salmon on the same used plate which now also had a piece of plastic wrap stuck to the side of it. You'd think they would have seen that. Strike three! Big minus points for that. The restaurant looks great overall with many Japanese decorations. The frozen white tuna is presented well on every plate. Will I go back again? No, most sadly I will not risk it again.
