In the late 1800’s, Thomas Patrick Thornton immigrated to Canada from England and formed the printing company Dudgeon and Thornton. Goldwyn (Goldie), Thomas’ second son followed him into the business and it was renamed T. P. Thornton and Sons in the early 1900s. Sir John A. McDonald was Thomas’ close friend and a client, Sir John was President of Manufacturer’s Life Insurance at the time.
Goldie took over running the business in 1938 and renamed it G. M. Thornton & Son. The business moved from its original University and Adelaide location to University and John. It continued its relationship with Manufacturer’s Life Insurance as well as other clients in the insurance and business district of Toronto. In 1967, G. M. Thornton & Son moved to its present Leaside location on Parkhurst Boulevard. Goldie’s son Charles (Chuck) took over the business in 1972, and continued its relationship with its clients in the downtown core.
In 1996 Chuck’s son Bruce joined the company and is the fourth generation of the family to be involved in the company. In today’s social media world, we not only serve the Greater Toronto Area, but the world.
